Chapter 7

Ali

We appeared in a hallway with a thick red rug and wooden panels covering the walls.

“The surveillance system!” I tried gesturing at the ceiling with my shoulder since my hands were still bound. We didn’t know if that was how Alexander’s wizards found us earlier, but it seemed a good guess.

Tavor flicked his fingers. “Disabled.” His voice sounded rough, though I didn’t know if it was from pain or from the attack itself hurting his vocal cords. I remembered feeling every muscle of my body constrict, like a cramp in every single one, except ten times worse. He cleared his throat and sounded more normal when he spoke again. “All technology other than the lights is no longer functioning.”

His eyes were still dark, his expression frightful enough that I didn’t want to try touching him. Not that I could in my current state.

“Are you okay?” I didn’t want to bring up my hands yet. He’d definitely gotten the worst of things in that room.

“Fine.” He rolled his shoulders and flicked his arms, as though working out kinks from the pain. “You?” His eyes searched mine. “Did they hurt you before I was brought in?”

I shook my head. “Ocean convinced Alexander that he would get better information from you than me.”

The orange of his eyes lightened as his mouth quirked into a smile. “Ocean? Did you have time to ask permission to call him that?”

“No,” I said, unable to help my prim tone.

Tavor shook his head, still smiling as he went behind me and tapped at the ropes. They dropped away and I couldn’t help a small moan, though I didn’t know if it was from pain or relief. I found deep red rimming my wrists when I brought them in front of me, and painful stinging encased both my hands. I shook them to increase blood circulation, hoping they would cooperate soon.

“Are the others okay?” I tried to massage my wrists, but my hands refused to comply, so I went back to shaking them. I managed to turn my wrist enough to spot that nearly another hour had passed. At least my prediction about me being dead and all the genies under Alexander’s control within the next hour hadn’t come true. “Did the wizards keep torturing you after I was taken?”

Tavor hesitated. “They stopped shortly after we stopped trying to follow you. We couldn’t find an opening and knew we’d be better off searching for one while having our magic blocked rather than our bodies contorted.”

I winced, my shoulders hunching in as I whispered, “I’m sorry.”

“For what?” he asked dryly, his voice tinged with amusement. “I brought us here.”

“I know, but—” But I wanted to help. I wanted to be of more use than just rubbing a gem to add another genie to our group. Instead, I said, “Are the others still in that room?” Not that I knew where the room was, though I hoped Tavor did. But what could we do to save them?

“They were when I was taken.
